Sooner or later, your FFL is going to be the focus of a TV reporting crew or a newspaper journalist asking questions about your business, your industry and how it relates to an ongoing crisis. Preparation is the key to handling these media professionals.
In 2004, when Ann Baldwin and Stephen Powell met for the first time at SHOT Show, Powell shared with Baldwin his vision of building a full-scale shooting range, training facility and retail business in Clovis, New Mexico. In October 2006, Powell made his dream a reality, and Patriot Outdoors was born. Baldwin Media Marketing, LLC, worked on the publicity surrounding the opening and, over the years, with several crises and negative news situations.
The powerful duo of Baldwin and Powell will present their experiences and lessons learned in their 2018 SHOT Show Retailer Seminar, “Handling the Good and Bad of Today’s Media.” Together the pair will demonstrate how Baldwin’s media training team, made up of former journalists and communications specialists, manage and control all potential media situations — positive and negative — by preparing each of its clients to maximize every media opportunity and deliver the right message on time.
Stephen D. Powell, President of Patriot Outdoors, is a U.S. Air Force veteran with more than 17 years of combined federal, military and civilian law enforcement experience. Office of Special Investigations, he conducted felony-level investigations, drug interdiction, surveillance and numerous search-and-seizure operations. Throughout his career, he has gained specialized training and experience from the FBI Academy, U.S. Army Special Forces and various federal, state and local agencies in Special Reaction Teams, Counter Assault Team operations, advanced marksmanship and arson investigations. He is an approved firearms instructor for New Mexico DPS and Texas DPS (TCOLE / LTC) and a Sig Sauer Academy Master Firearms Instructor. He is also an active member of the National Tactical Officers Association, NRA member and holder of multiple NRA instructor certifications, an NSSF Member and an active shooting competitor.
