This past summer NSSF partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to embark on a first-of-its-kind national plan to build and implement public education resources for firearms retailers, shooting ranges and the firearms-owning community about suicide prevention and firearms. With suicide accounting for nearly two-thirds of all firearm fatalities annually, the topic deserves our attention. To help our retailers and range owners better understand the issues at hand, AFSP’s Dr. Christine Moutier will present a special Retailer Seminar, “Suicide Prevention.”
Since earning her medical degree and training in psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Moutier has been a practicing psychiatrist, professor of psychiatry, dean in the medical school, medical director of the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla, California, and has been clinically active with diverse patient populations, such as veterans and Asian refugee populations, as well as physicians and academic leaders with mental health conditions. She has testified before the U.S. Congress on suicide prevention, and has appeared as an expert in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time magazine, The Economist, The Atlantic, the BBC, CNN and other print and television outlets.
NSSF is providing this Retailer Seminar free of charge to all retailers and range owners and operators who wish to attend. The seminar will center around educating your staff about suicide and suicide prevention, understanding warning signs associated with suicide, knowing that resources are available to help those in crisis, and options for deterring access to means. You’ll also learn about simple techniques you can employ to mitigate the risk of such a tragic event happening at your place of business, as well as to a friend, family member or loved one. This special session will be held Tuesday, January 17, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Again, there is no fee to attend, but because we expect to fill the seats for this seminar quickly and because this topic is so important, we encourage you to reserve your seat once you’ve successfully completed your registration to attend the 2017 SHOT Show. Simply go to your dashboard at SHOTShow.org and add this seminar to your shopping cart.
